C-U-P-P-I-N-G Spells Pain Relief

By: Matt Furey

Last night I got home around 1 a.m. - which is typical for me while in China. My wife was already in bed with our two young children. Naturally, I had something important to tell her so I woke her up.

"Zhannie, you gotta see this. It's unreal," I said, ripping my shirt off - then turning around to show her my back.

Now, my wife is no stranger to traditional Chinese medicine. She and I have gone together for accupuncture, foot massage, body massage - and cupping.

But recently, I had some pain in my chest and my brother-in-law told me he had the treatment for it. He took me to a medical massage business and found the doctor who was the best at "cupping" - a Chinese technique for removing pain, congestion, you name it.

I've been cupped before and have returned home with 12-15 darkish circles on my back - but this time the "treatment" was a completely different ballgame. This doctor really, really knew what he was doing.

On day one he massaged the painful area until I was ready to break every bone in his body. I'm telling you ... it hurt. Then he told me to return two more days in a row and the problem would be gone.

On day two the pain was no longer from the original source - it was from the brutal massage. I was reluctant to return for Day 2 - but bro-in-law convinced me that there was no other way. So I agreed.

And ... last night, he started with head massage, then trap massage. Then he beat up my already sore area some more - and to my surprise, ahhhh yes, it was feeling better.

Then he took out a bunch of glass cups. He lit a fire inside one and slapped it on my chest. We're talking pain - but in a good way.

Several minutes later he pulled it off and said, "Chuan guo lai." Turn over.

I turned over and he rubbed medicine over my entire back - then took out another glass cup, lit it on fire and started to scrap up and down, then from side to side. This technique is called "gua sha." After several minutes of massaging he told me that my skin was bright red. Well ... no kidding.

He put the ONE cup away, got his lighter out again, and proceeded to set a whole bucket full of them on fire, then slap them on my back - but is the exact spots that I needed it most. Naturally, he'd determined the exact spots needed while doing the head massage.

Next thing you know I have 15 of these cups on my back and they are pulling my skin to the ceiling. Bro-in-law enters and sees what is coming out of my skin, then begins to ask questions.

"Tai duo leng qi," the doctor says. Too much cold qi.

What's this leng qi look like? Well, you don't really want to know, do you.

At any rate, when all was finished, my back was not only full of huge bruises, but welts and indentations, too. Never felt so good, believe me.

So when I tore my shirt off and showed my wife, she was sooooo happy. She's thinking to herself, "Ya know, tis about time this guy got his butt kicked."

Truly, she was happy because she knows how helpful and healthful this practice is. And she's going in today for some of it herself.

To people in the "West" - what I have just described sounds strange - yet we think nothing of slicing open someone's chest and connecting a vein from the leg to the heart - ala former Prez Clinton's surgery.

Yes, it may be strange - but let me tell you - I know how to spell relief. It's C-U-P-P-I-N-G.

Today I feel like a billion bucks and can't wait to go back for more tonight.

If you ever have the chance to get cupped by a good doctor of Chinese medicine - all I can say is GO. You'll be pleasantly surprised how good it is.
